Malandra's Martial Arts
Center and the Mushin Do Martial Arts System were formed by Donald
Malandra, Michael Malandra and Lester Rudnick. The physical and mental
roots of the system are derived from both Korean and Japanese
disciplines. The Mushin Do System is a modern day practical approach of
self-defense for people of all ages. Students learn practical techniques
and concepts that have been proven effective in controlling and stopping
an aggressive opponent(s). Instructors in all classes emphasize
self-defense, physical and mental awareness, building confidence and
reducing stress.
Mushin (no mind - no thoughts) is the way of going beyond thinking; the
student's method of response is not mechanical or conditioned. One's
reactions are not set and predictable. We teach our students to react
according to the changing environment with a changing response in a
free-flowing manner. Just like a child who must first learn to crawl,
then walk before they can run ― so must the student learn to think
before they can go on beyond thinking. One maintains an attitude of
Mushin by simply watching the adversary in a receptive manner and then
reacting accordingly.
Our system is not a
traditional martial art. Unlike many other schools, the instructors do
not emphasize the memorizing of pre-arranged movements such as katas
(except in children's classes). We want our students to be able to react
to any self-defense situation, using their instincts and being able to
adapt their skills to any situation they may encounter outside of class.
By training in the Mushin Do System, not only can one defend themselves
in almost any situation, but one can also build an inner self-confidence
in all aspects of their lives.
